“Winter make us a great family. Study together, walk together, eat tougher, drink together, laugh together, togetherness make us feel warm in cold weather.”
The beauty of snow enchanted all of us. We do not have such beautiful yet freezing thing back then in Indonesia. Gazing the white snow falling from the sky boosted up our excitement in the first day of our arrival in South Korea. Even before the event started, this exploding excitement make two of our member get lost due to the confusing MRT system. But people in South Korea are kind, and much thanks to the body language that helped them a lot to found their way back.
Day 1 (14 January 2013)
We arrived in Seoul when the temperature was around -7 degree Celsius. We stayed at a guest house in Hongdae, after lunch we had an orientation of our program for the whole week, each student introduce their self, and we talked about a lot of things. We were separated into 4 groups consisting student from South Korea and Indonesia for facilitate at this program. The welcome party was held in a restaurant which served Korean traditional food. Then we went to small hill at Hyewa, we climbed together in cold weather to see Seoul city from highland, it’s our first wonderful night.
Day 2 (15 January 2013)
In the second day, we had to go to Konkuk University. Our impression of Konkuk University was really great. Their Veterinary Medicine Building is really good. In Konkuk University we had to give explanation about our campus lifestyle. Each of delegates gave a good picture of their campus. Not just doing presentation, we also had chance to have tour in Animal Hospital of Konkuk Univeristy. The facilities of Animal Hospital of Konkuk University are perfect. They had private inspection room, private therapy room, Digital Radiology, ICU, Ultrasonography, and private laboratories that could improve the diagnostic. They also had MRI machine, which is not really common for Veterinary Medicine in Asia country, especially Indonesia.
After great Hospital tour, we also had chance to have a great lunch in Konkuk Univeristy Cafeteria. After we had finished our lunch, we would go to 63 building to visit the sea world. We were divided into 4 groups and every group could have an aquarium tour. In sea aquarium there were seal live show too. After we had great time in the sea world, we had dinner in Korea traditional market. Each group could decide their own food choice. My group taste lots of Korean traditional food, so I cannot remember all the name of that food. But, I just remember that all of Korean foods are really delicious. I remember that I tasted Korean fish cake because I really like it most..
Day 3 (16 January 2013)
“Wake up guys!! today is snowfall!!”, we hear loud sound from one of student. Maybe for Indonesian’s student it’s first time for see snowfall, because in Indonesia just have 2 season, rainy and dry season. Under the snowfall, we walk together to the Subway Station, next destination is campus tour and animal clinic at Seoul National University.
This time we got many lecture about surgical operation, Ortho surgery and experimental cloning. In Seoul National University, the facilities are totally modern. They had MRI, ultrasonography, private inspection room, private therapy room, and they also had dentistry department. Actually Seoul National University had 2 animal hospitals but the animal hospital that we went was for small animal. They also have hospital for large animal.
After we have an excellence tour, we had chance to see snoopy. Snoopy is the first cloned dog. An Afgan Hound that Seoul National University has successfully cloned. We got really good information how the snoopy was made. We also had a chance to take a picture with snoopy and the entire of Snoopy researcher. After had a great tour in Seoul National University. We went to my most exciting place, The National Animal, Plant, and Fish Quarantine. We were welcomed really well by them. All of the delegates were introduced about the System of Veterinary Medicine Study in Korea.
In Korea, They need 6 years to get Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Korea has 10 Faculties, which were in all around Korea. After we had good introductions about veterinary medicine in Korea. We also had chance to hear presentation from the professor about rabies from Korea raccoon dog. He told us about his research. After the good presentation, they also sent us to BSL-3 laboratory close to the Animal, Plant, and Fish Quarantine building. In that laboratory, we were introduced about Avian Influenza research in Korea. They tell us how to collect the sample from the poultry in South Korea and how to test for each sample. After that, we go back to our hostel and enjoy our dinner in our guesthouse because we had a ramyeon time. I really love ramyeon time, because I felt that we look like a family, the brother and sister.
Day 4 (17 January 2013)
The fourth day of our exchange greet us with a warmer temperature. This timewe would had the chance to go to Royal Animal Referral. We were introduced about the clinic. This is the infamous clinic in South Korea had lots of facilities, such as MRI, Physiotherapy, ICU, General surgery room and Special surgery room. This clinic has 100 veterinarian staff and live streaming during the operation time, so the owner can watch their pet during the operation time. We also had chance to go to National Folk Museum. We were introduced about Korea history, which and it’s relation with animal. Not far from the National Folk Museum we also go to Gyong Bok Gung Place (One of Emperor place).
In Gyong Bok Gung Place we were introduced about Korea History during the emperor time. After had great cultural tour, we went to Insadong traditional market. After we had great dinner there, we were divided into groups again and we could go around Insadong. In Insadong we had meat, rice, some vegetable soup and some kimchi for dinner. We also learned how to well-manneredly use the Chopsticks. After dinner we goes to walking around in Insandong street buy some cake for dessert and bring in to the cafe to drink hot tea. Our togetherness at that place make us feel warm in cold wheather. Before go back in hostel we have sufficient time for shoping some gift.
Day 5 (18 January 2013)
This day we went to Seoul Zoo. At Seoul Zoo, We were introduced how they handle the animal during winter. Hypothermia usually happened during winter. After the presentation form Seoul Zoo, we had chance to go to the shelter place during the winter. We go to primate, lion, and dolphin shelter place. We also had a tour in their clinical pathology labs, necropsy room, and parasitic labs. After we had great time in Seoul zoo, we had fun in Soul land. We tried so many cool games in Seoul land. We also tried the snow sled in this amusement park. After we had fun there, we would have dinner around our guesthouse. Thanks God its Friday was our place to get dinner. We share and enjoy our togetherness at that time. We enjoyed our last night during the exchange program. After the dinner they accompanied us to get Korean Sauna. It was my first experiences to try Korea sauna. I will not forget that Amazing experiences.
Day 6 (19 January 2013)
Last schedule was Farewell Party. After we packed all of our suitcase, we walked together in to the Brunch Cafe. In here, we finally share about our own information in a sheet. So, in one sheet, with one name, we wrote down all we want into that paper, we can draw anything. After we done for our Brunch, we take a picture (with many pictures) and finally we say goodbye to the delegates. Its hard to hard say goodbye. We’ll miss this moment, when we study together, walk together, laugh together, eat together and drink together. Hope can meet again when we already be Veterinarian.
